Gina Carano Reaches Settlement With Disney Over Firing From The Mandalorian, Thanks Elon Musk for Legal Support

Gina Carano, the actor known for portraying Cara Dune in the Star Wars spin-off series The Mandalorian, has officially settled her lawsuit against Lucasfilm and its parent company, The Walt Disney Co., following her controversial firing in 2021. The settlement brings an end to a high-profile legal dispute that spotlighted ongoing tensions over free speech, cancel culture, and ideological clashes in Hollywood.

The lawsuit, filed in a California federal court in early 2024, claimed that Carano was wrongfully terminated for expressing her conservative political views on social media. The controversy erupted after she shared a post that compared the current treatment of Republicans in America to the persecution of Jews during Nazi Germany. The backlash was swift and fierce, leading to the trending hashtag #FireGinaCarano and her eventual removal from the series after two seasons.

Carano’s legal battle received a significant boost when Elon Musk and his company, X Corp (formerly Twitter), stepped in to fund her lawsuit through their Legal Defense Fund. Musk had previously stated that he would support individuals who faced discrimination or termination for posting on the X platform.

While the details of the settlement remain confidential, court filings show that both parties agreed to dismiss the case with prejudice—a legal term indicating that the lawsuit cannot be brought back to court. A judge’s formal approval is still pending, but the scheduled February 2026 trial in Los Angeles is now off the table.

In a heartfelt statement shared on her X account, Carano expressed gratitude for the outcome:

“I have come to an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm which I believe is the best outcome for all parties involved. I hope this brings some healing to the force.”

She extended special thanks to Musk, saying:

“Thank you Mr. Musk and @X for backing my case and asking for nothing in return. You’ve done a good Samaritan deed that I’ll never forget.”

Carano also praised her legal team at Schaerr|Jaffe and gave credit to her supporters for keeping her story alive.

“I am humbled and grateful to God for His love and grace in this outcome… I’m excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me.”

Lucasfilm, for its part, released a surprisingly warm statement through The Associated Press:

“Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect. With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”

Carano, a former MMA fighter turned actor, was once considered a rising star in the Star Wars franchise. Her role as Cara Dune had sparked discussions of a possible spinoff series before her dismissal. In addition to the Holocaust post, she had previously been criticized for mocking mask mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic and spreading misinformation about voter fraud in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

With the lawsuit now behind her, Carano’s case could set a precedent in the entertainment industry—especially with Musk’s Legal Defense Fund now in play. Legal experts suggest the fund might encourage others who feel they’ve been silenced or unfairly penalized for their online expression to pursue legal action against major corporations.

As for The Mandalorian, the franchise continues. A new feature film titled The Mandalorian and Grogu, starring Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver, is slated for release in summer 2026. Whether or not Carano will return to the galaxy far, far away remains uncertain—but the door, it seems, has not been fully closed.
